Fish in a Black Box

Zoos and aquariums strive to research, protect, and bring us closer to flora and fauna. However, these institutions frequently face criticism. The reason: living animals are taken from the wild and turned into display objects in small aquariums. The zoo becomes a data collection site, the aquarium glass a screen with a background video, resembling an archival attempt of animals.
Alternate Aquaria takes all of this to the extreme and seeks to design a modern solution to this criticism of aquariums, without involving real living beings. A fusion of reality and digital space brings the fascination of the underwater world into an art exhibition context. This highlights the issue of fish displacement - their disappearance from the wild into aquariums, and ultimately into the digital realm.
Alternate Aquaria is an ode to the beauty of the underwater world, aiming to inspire new solutions while illustrating the consequences if we do not act in time, leaving the animals as mere ghosts in the digital space.
